Interview with Suzanne Johnson + Giveaway

Hi everyone, hope you are all well this fine Tuesday morning! Today I've been a part of a tour for the amazing Suzanne Johnson and her new book RIVER ROAD! This post is something I've been looking forward to for a while now because I GOT TO INTERVIEW SUZANNE JOHNSON!! *does happy dance* Also at the end of this post is an awesome giveaway so make sure to check that out too! Alright, lets get started!

Vikki: First of all, thank you for being with us at V’s Book Life today! I am so excited because I absolutely loved ROYAL STREET, it has to be one of my top 10 favourite reads so far this year! I could not wait to read RIVER ROAD...to say this series has me gripped would be an understatement; I’m completely drawn in!
Suzanne: Thank you! That’s awesome to hear!

Vikki: First of all, I like to know a bit more about each author, so can you tell me 3 things about yourself that we couldn’t find on the internet?
Suzanne: Hmm…I like to use family names in my books: DJ is a mashup of my great-grandmothers Drusilla Jane Harris and Ida Jaco (they’d probably spin in their graves if they knew!). I was president of the “underground French club” in high school; my small school discontinued courses in French, so the club decided to stay together and meet in secret. And I grew up in a very small town in rural Alabama—my high school graduating class of 78 people was the largest in school history (the class behind us had 39 people)!

Vikki: As I said earlier I absolutely love the Sentinels of New Orleans series but how would you describe the series to those who have yet to read it?
Suzanne: It’s about what might happen if Hurricane Katrina had not only torn down the levees between Lake Pontchartrain and the city of New Orleans but had also torn down the barriers between our world and the world Beyond. So it’s heartbreaking from the Katrina angle, but once we get away from the devastation of the storm it’s also funny and chaotic and I like to think it takes some paranormal mythologies and turns them on their heads—especially in River Road. It’s about a young female wizard who’s not exactly the most kickass heroine on the block, but she’s smart and resourceful and creative…which makes her fun. (Or at least I hope so.)

Vikki: DJ is definitely fun :)! Your newest release is RIVER ROAD, which will be book 2 in the Sentinels of New Orleans series...could you tell us a bit more about it?
Suzanne: In River Road we’ve moved out of post-Katrina survival mode and the borders between worlds are dropping permanently. The wizards will still be monitoring the borders, so DJ and her partner Alex have their hands full. There are two feuding clans of merpeople living near New Orleans, and in the process of trying to broker a truce, DJ and Alex find a dead wizard and discover that someone—or something—is poisoning the water of the Mississippi River. And then the chaos ensues!

Vikki: Were there any surprises for you while writing RIVER ROAD, unforeseen challenges or did the book take a turn you didn’t quite expect?
Suzanne: There are always characters that take me by surprise. In Royal Street, it was the undead pirate Jean Lafitte, who was supposed to be in the book for one scene but then refused to leave. He’s become a major series character now. In River Road, I was most surprised by the merman Rene Delachaise. I’d planned for Rene and DJ to be enemies, or at least “frenemies,” but they ended up clicking. Not in a romantic way, but as friends. It changed the way the book developed, and he’ll factor into future books.

Vikki: One of the aspects of ROYAL STREET I loved is that everything from the historical undead pirate Jean Lafitte and the divisions of congress wizard to the description of New Orleans after Katrina is so detailed. Where does your inspiration for the Sentinels of New Orleans series come from?
Suzanne: Well, the Katrina stuff came from my own experiences as a Katrina survivor myself. I was living at the city at the time of the storm. It was an awful, awful experience, but I was able to use my own memories and observations to lend an accuracy and, I hope, a sensitivity to what my character DJ sees and experiences when she goes back to the city after the flooding. My Katrina experiences are what inspired the whole series.
As for the rest of the world-building, I’m a little OCD, so I worked out the way the magical world would function and the political structure from the very beginning. As for the rest, I do a lot of research. I’ve read every biography on Jean Lafitte I could get my hands on. I study maps. I read histories.

Vikki: So what can we expect from you next? More Sentinels of New Orleans or are you working on something else?
Suzanne: I am in revisions on the third Sentinels book, which is called Elysian Fields. It will be out in August. Before then, however, I will be doing some shorts, including at least one from the viewpoint of Jean Lafitte—which is totally fun. I also have a digital short that came out recently, “Christmas in Dogtown,” that’s a holiday story set in Louisiana but not tied to the Sentinels series.

Vikki: One of the things that first drew me to the series was the cover for ROYAL STREET, I thought it was beautiful and caught my eye straight away and RIVER ROAD’S is the same. Who did the artwork and is it how you imagined the cover to be?
I love the covers too! The artist for both is Cliff Nielsen, and I think he nailed the covers. I especially love River Road. He always hides little details in his covers that are like “easter eggs.” On the Royal Street cover, if you look closely, it looks as if the cover is a photo that was water-damaged, like in the flooding, and the French Quarter street is ghosted behind the main image. In River Road, there are a couple of surprises. If you look closely, in the lower right corner there is an alligator lurking in the water (his head is kind of behind the letter D), and the cover is “spattered” with mud. When you read the book, the reason for that will become clear!

Vikki: *Runs off to closely examine my covers*...Woah, that's so cool. I love hidden aspects! So, do you have a writing ritual? Somewhere you have to be to write or something you have to do etc?
Suzanne: No, I have a full-time day job in addition to my writing, plus a daily book blog, so I’ve learned to write anywhere and anytime I can grab a few minutes. Ideally, I’m in my home office with my laptop, but I’ve written outlines for scenes on the back of an envelope while shopping for groceries. I don’t recommend that, however.

Vikki: What do you love about living in New Orleans? I’m planning a visit sometime in the next 2 years and would love to know what to expect since I haven’t been anywhere like it.
Suzanne: I adore New Orleans, and I’ve learned over the years that it’s one of those cities people aren’t ambivalent about. They either love it passionately or hate it passionately. It’s chaotic and messy and inefficient, but it has a beauty and culture and passion for life that’s like nowhere else. The people, the music, architecture, food, ambience: all of it’s amazing. I always urge people to get outside the French Quarter and see what the real city is like, from the Central Business District, or CBD, to Uptown, to the Irish Channel, to the Garden District. I could talk about it all day!

Vikki: It sounds amazing! Next question...what’s your average day like?
Suzanne: On weekdays, I have a day job from 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Over my lunch hour, I’ll usually read over what I’ve written the night before. I unwind until about 7:30 p.m., then I go and write until about 11. I put in more writing hours on weekends, especially on Sunday, when I’m usually at my computer for 10-12 hours. If I’m not on deadline, I’ll usually take Saturdays off or only work an hour or two. Man, how boring does that sound?

Vikki: If you could spend a day with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Suzanne: I’d like to spend the day with my great-great grandfather. I became fascinated with him while doing genealogy a few years back. He was a farmer in northwest Alabama at the time of the Civil War. He was too old to enlist himself, but he outfitted his three oldest sons, ages 19, 21, and 23, with horses and supplies, and sent them to fight for the Union. Yes, Southern boys, fighting for the Union—all three of them were killed. He was such a Unionist that he had to spend the last couple of years of the war hiding out in the hills because his neighbors in the Confederate Home Guard were trying to hang him. He was a stubborn old dude, and I’d like to talk to him. See what drove him, kept him going, gave him the courage to stand up for what he believed in.

Vikki: What is your favourite book/film/television programme right now?
Um…(shuffles feet)…I like these culture-immersion reality shows that are popular in the States right now. “Swamp People,” about alligator-hunters in Louisiana. “Ice Road Truckers” about long-haul truckers in Alaska and northern Canada who drive over frozen lakes and rivers. “Billy the Exterminator.” Don’t even ask about that one.

Vikki: And finally, what book are you reading right now?
I’m reading a paranormal romance, Cynthia Eden’s Angel in Chains, for which I’m doing a review.

Vikki: Thank you so much for stopping by, I’m a huge fan of the series and will be looking forward to reading more work from you!
Suzanne: Thank you!

Interview + Giveaway with Quinn Loftis

Hello! It's me again. Now today I'm honoured to have been able to interview the lovely Quinn Loftis as part of a Bewitching Book Tour for JUST ONE DROP, book 3 in her amazing GREY WOLVES SERIES! Quinn is also hosting a very exciting giveaway throughout this tour - the details of which can be found at the bottom of this post!

Vikki: Hi Quinn! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. It’s great to have you with us today! If you're ready, lets get started.

Vikki: For those who haven’t read the Grey Wolves series yet can you sum it up?

Quinn: The Grey Wolves Series starts out with Prince of Wolves, here we meet Jacque Pierce, her two best friends Jen Adams and Sally Morgan. 3 ordinary girls living in Coldspring, TX. Their summer is winding down and rumour has it that the neighbours across the street from Jacque are having a foreign exchange student from Romania live with them. Of course since Coldspring is such a small town any news is big news. Jacque and her friends want the scoop on the new student. Turns out he's tall, dark and incredibly handsome…and furry. His name is Fane, and he is the prince to the Romanian Grey Wolves. He arrives in Coldspring and within minutes of stepping out of his limo he faces his destiny.

Blood Rites-Book 2 is a continuation of Fane and Jacque's story. Just when we think they are going to get their happily ever after circumstances and people with their own agenda step in attempting to destroy all the Fane and Jacque have built. One of these people happens to share a pesky little thing called DNA with Jacque. We also begin to see another relationship building between sassy Jen and brooding Decebel, the Beta to the Romanian pack.

Just One Drop- this begins Jen and Decebel's story. Blood Rites end's with the question, is Jen human? Just One Drop answers this question and introduces readers to the path Jen must follow. Jacque, Fane and Sally are still very prominent in this story, and many new friends are introduced. In Just One Drop Jen and the other single pack members are required to attend The Gathering, something that hasn't happened in over a century. But trouble, deceit, hatred, and envy are all brewing. We will travel through this journey with Jen only to come to a maddening cliff hanger.
Out Of The Dark- Book 4 due to release on June 7, 2012 is the continuation of Jen and Dec's story.

Vikki: I absolutely loved Just One Drop. What inspired you to write about Werewolves? Have you always been drawn to the Paranormal Romance genre?

Quinn: I love the paranormal genre, and for me werewolves are just the crème of the crop. They're tough, possessive, honourable and their animal nature gives them a redeeming quality that can be hard to achieve in other paranormal characters.

Vikki: I have to say that Jen and Decebel don’t exactly get off to the best start in this book and they hit some rough patches, did you always envision them being together?

Quinn: Yes, I felt like their personalities were going to be perfect for one another. Jen needed a guy who wouldn't let her walk all over him and Decebel needed a girl with a back bone.

Vikki: I do love Jen’s no-nonsense attitude when Decebel gets all Alpha wolf on her, though Decebel is quite overbearing at times in his quest to protect Jen. Is this a trait of all the wolves or is it just Decebel?

Quinn: I think to an extent all werewolves are this way, it's just part of their makeup. However just like humans, werewolves are individuals and therefore have distinct personalities and quirks. Decebel just happens to have a little more overbearing tendencies than others.

Vikki: Much of Just one Drop is set in Romania. Why did you choose this location? Have you visited the country (it’s on my ‘to visit’ list!)?

Quinn: I haven't visited it although I would love to. I love the history and mystery behind the country. As we all know there is a lot of folk lore based there and I just thought it would be a great back drop for a paranormal series.

Vikki: Definitely agree, I think Romania would be beautiful. You left me wanting so much more at the end of Just One Drop, such a brilliant finish! I’ve seen that you have the next book, Out of the Dark, scheduled for release June 7th 2012. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

Quinn: Out Of The Dark is going to be more intense than it's predecessors and have some tougher struggles. But the humour the other books have had will still be there and we will still see and hear from all the characters. OOTD is the continuation of Jen and Dec story. As we know JOD ended with Jen in dyer straights and Dec not knowing where she is. Not only that but something is amiss amongst on of the other packs and there is a possibility that dark magic is involved. Jen and Dec are going to go through their share of up's and downs in this book. They, along with the others will have their moments of heart break, but also triumph. No worries, I don't believe in un-happy endings, so all the gut wrenching will be worth it in the end.

Vikki: Phew, I must say I can’t wait to see where you take us next! So do you know how many books will be in the Grey Wolves series?

Quinn: There will be 7 books as of right now in this series
.
Vikki: Oh awesome! What are you working on at the moment?

Quinn: I just started the outline for Book 5 which has yet to be named.

Vikki: I’m personally a huge Vasile fan but do you have a character you like writing the most or have the most fun with?

Quinn: Honestly Jen and Dec have been my favourite; however Costin I think is going to rank right up there with them.

Vikki: Aww, I love Costin as well! So which of your characters personalities do you think is most like yours?

Quinn: I'm a balance between Jen and Jacque.

Vikki: Nice! Where is your favourite place to write?

Quinn: My dining room table.

Vikki: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?

Quinn: Read, laundry, spend time with my family and get together with friends.

Vikki: If you could go to dinner with any author (dead or alive) who would it be?

Quinn: C.S. Lewis or Jane Austen

Vikki: Ohh, good choices. So finally, what book are you reading right now?

Quinn: Just started City of Bones The Mortal Instruments Series

Vikki: Man, I love that series! Thank you so much for your time. I’m looking forward to Out of the Dark!

Quinn: Thank you for having me!

Interview: KaSonndra Leigh

The lovely KaSonndra Leigh
I've got a treat in store for you all today. Earlier in the week I reviewed When Copper Suns Fall by KaSonndra Leigh and today the lady herself KaSonndra Leigh has kindly answered some of my questions. Enjoy!

Hi, KaSonndra and welcome to V’s Book Life. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I’m a little nervous as it’s my first interview but we should do alright. I’ve just finished When Copper Suns Fall and really enjoyed it (read my review here). Here’s the blurb for those who haven’t read it yet!
'In fifteen-year-old Chela Prizeon’s city, alchemy is forbidden and angels hide among the mortal. With a deadly virus ravaging the globe, Chela’s nightmarish memories compels her to experience a past riddled with gloom, and now her brother is infected. Chela’s only hope is the Caduceans, slayers sworn to protect the last seven Light Keepers and the ancient memories they share. A group led by the sometimes elusive, sometimes infuriating boy who intrigues Chela. But can she trust this boy with the mysterious past, someone who can influence her memories? With the Caduceans aid, Chela races to defeat her rivals, to unearth dark family secrets, desperate to find a cure…only to discover the glutovirus is far more than a simple disease.'

Vikki: This is a great storyline. I found Chela’s world and the people that inhabit it fascinating. Where did you get you inspiration from?
KaSonndra: When I sat down and began writing When Copper Suns Fall, the story was a standard in your face, super-high fantasy. It came complete with blue creatures, unicorns, princes, and all that. Chela’s name was Cara and Faris had a name that has been overused lately. I wasn’t trying to be fad girl or the Lady Gaga of the writing world. But rather, I was trying to write the story I always wanted to read. One that came to life when my oldest son asked me: “what if angels that looked like people lived in a dystopian society?” The seeds were planted, the lights in my muse’s apartment lit up. The challenge was on. I asked myself: “how do I stick to an urban setting with fantastical elements, but bring my love of dystopia into play?”

Vikki: Why the urban fantasy/dystopian genre? Have you always been drawn it?
KaSonndra: I love both of these genres. I have certain books I can devour in one sitting, and others well, it just takes a little longer. Doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not good or anything at all. I tend to love dystopian novels and urban fantasy. They’re magical and intriguing and everything I enjoy in a story.

Vikki: Chela has an awful lot to take in over the course of this book and makes a few tough decisions. She is a very strong person, as is Faris. Did you base her or any of your characters on real people?
KaSonndra: Of course, our writing always is based on the events, people, and places that most shaped our lives. I’d say the characters, themes, and overall tone of Copper Suns’ message is based on the way I feel about losing my grandmother. She was the one who told me to learn how to talk to the flowers. They hold the secrets hidden by the angels. So that’s what I did.

Vikki: I noticed that When Copper Suns Fall is book 1 of a trilogy, can you give us a hint as to where you’ll take Chela next?
KaSonndra: Sure can. You can expect to hear more from Faris’s voice in the next novels. You’ll also get more insight into the world where the Great War began. This time, Chela will dive deeper into Seth and Faris’s mysterious world on the other side of the river.

Vikki: If When Copper Suns Fall were to be made into a film or T.V. show, who would you have play Chela?
KaSonndra: I actually did a character mock up of the main characters in WCSF. And for Chela, I picked Jessica Szhor who plays Vanessa on Gossip Girl.

Vikki: Have you got any novels being released in 2012? Can you tell us a bit about them?
KaSonndra: Yes! Yes! I’d love to tell you about them. The expanded edition of When Copper Suns Fall will be released on March 31st. I have a short story being published by Crushing Hearts & Black Butterfly in May. My Gothic paranormal novel Hacienda Moon will be pubbed in June. I’m really excited about that one because there’s a new type of supernatural creature being used in this one. And finally, in late fall of this year, we’ll be releasing the sequel to Copper Suns. It’s called When Silver Moons Rise. As you can see I’ve been VERY very busy! :-D

Vikki: Wow, you have been busy! Where is your favourite place to write?
KaSonndra: I have a swing in my backyard where I sit and listen to nature all around me as my inspiration. Even though I only get to write outside like that for a few select months out of the year, I still enjoy connecting with life around me. Nothing is more inspirational.

Vikki: What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
KaSonndra: I have tons of hobbies. When I’m not writing, I enjoy hanging out with my X-men. In case you haven’t read up on who they are, I’ll tell you they’re my two boys. And yes, both their names start with an X. That being said, another of my favourites is gardening. It’s meditative and offers a cure for writer’s block like you wouldn't believe.

Vikki: If you could meet any author (dead or alive) who would it be? (For me it’s the Bronte sisters…they started my love of the written word!)
KaSonndra: This is a loaded question. Why? Because I can’t really decide on one person. I mean, I’m stressing out over here as I try to decide who I’d want to meet first. I’d say Ann Radcliffe or Bram Stoker. I might be a dystopian fantasy author, but at the end of the day, I’m scouting out the latest in Gothic lit. Nothing beats the classics and those two set a very high bar for us authors to reach.

Vikki: And finally, what book are you reading right now?
KaSonndra: I have six books I’m reading right now. LOL I’m finishing up Graveminder by Melissa Marr first and then moving on to the Hunger Games trilogy...again! :-D

Vikki : Thank you so much for your time. I’ll be looking forward to book 2 in the Copper Suns trilogy!
KaSonndra: And thank you for taking the time to host me and review my novel When Copper Suns Fall. I heart you dearly. :-D
