Stacking the Shelves {3}

Hello again everyone, I realise I have been absent for the last couple of weeks but I've been working 6 days a week for 10 hours a day so have had very little time to spare (most of which was taken up with sleeping, eating and housework) but now I'm back and better than ever...despite a recent case of tonsillitis. So lets get this show on the road with another installation of Stacking the Shelves (hosted by Tynga's Reviews). Let's get started!

Books I've Received for Review

Dark Light of Day by Jill Archer - received for review as part of a Bewitching Books Tour

Armageddon is over. The demons won. And yet somehow…the world has continued. Survivors worship patron demons under a draconian system of tributes and rules. These laws keep the demons from warring among themselves, and the world from slipping back into chaos.
Noon Onyx grew up on the banks of the river Lethe, the daughter of a prominent politician, and a descendant of Lucifer’s warlords. Noon has a secret: She was born with waning magic, the dark, destructive, fiery power that is used to control demons and maintain the delicate peace among them. But a woman with waning magic is unheard of, and some would consider her an abomination.
Noon is summoned to attend St. Lucifer’s, a school of demon law. She must decide whether to declare her powers there…or to attempt to continue hiding them, knowing the price for doing so may be death. And once she meets the forbiddingly powerful Ari Carmine—who suspects Noon is harboring magic as deadly as his own—Noon realizes there may be more at stake than just her life.

I thought this sounded really interesting but a couple of people say it's not that good...but I'm reserving judgement until I've read it. My tour stop is October 29th so look out for my review then!

Books I've Bought

Nightlife by Rob Thurman (Cal Leandros, book 1)

There are monsters among us. There always have been and there always will be. I’ve known that since I can remember, just like I’ve always known I was one ... Well, half of one, anyway.
Welcome to New York City - a troll under the Brooklyn Bridge, a boggle in Central Park, and a beautiful vampire in a penthouse on the Upper East Side. Most humans are oblivious to the preternatural nightlife around them, but Cal Leandros is only half human.
His father’s dark lineage is the stuff of nightmares – and his entire otherworldly elf race are after Cal. His half brother, Niko, gave up college to keep them on the run for four years, but now the Grendel monsters are back. And Cal is about to learn why they want him. He is the key to unleashing their hell on earth. The fate of the human world will be decided in the fight of Cal’s life...

What can I say, I've actually bought books 1-4 of this series in one go and I've enjoyed them so far :) But Nightlife is book 1 so is the one I'm mentioning today! I'm a little in love with Niko haha.

Born of Silence by Sherrilyn Kenyon (The League, book 5)

Death Stalks Them All... Kere is the second most infamous member of the shadow organization known as Sentella. An explosive engineer who strikes terror into the hearts of the League, the bounty on his head is truly staggering. No one knows his true identity.
The daughter of a traitor, Zarya Starska grew up hard on the back streets of hell- her family hunted to the brink of extinction. But Zarya dreams of a different life and a different world. A world where the harsh hand of the Caronese emperor doesn’t destroy his subjects. As a Resistance leader, her goal is to topple the government that needlessly ruined the lives of her family and comrades-in-arms. In this deadly quest, the only person she can trust is a mysterious man known only as Kere.
By The Light Of Day... Kere has a dark secret and a brutal past. As he aids the Resistance, he’s actually working to bring down his own family- the Cruels- so named for the viciousness in their blood that runs so deep, no other name would do. Born and bred from one of the oldest and noblest families in the United Systems, Kere’s real name is Darling Cruel. And the one thing he wants most is to see his uncle, who stole the crown by murdering his father, pay for his crimes.
If You Tell A Lie Long Enough, It Becomes The Truth... In order to protect his mother from execution, Darling’s entire life has been built on a lie that he dare not breathe a contrary word about. His hands tied by his uncle’s cruelty. No one has ever seen the real him. No one except Zarya. She’s the only person he’s ever fully trusted with the truth. But when she betrays him by allowing a weapon he designed solely for her to be used against him, all bets are off.
The Hero Is Now The Monster... Betrayed to the deepest level, Darling becomes an enemy even worse than his uncle. His goal is not only to reign, but to kill every Resistance member he can find. He won’t rest until all of them are dead and that includes Zarya.
The Twisted Hand Of Fate... Zarya is the only hope to reach the heart of the man her people once considered their ally. A man who hates her with a fury so great that she knows it’s just a matter of time before he kills her. But if she can find the part of him that once trusted her, the part of him that once loved her, she might be able to save not only her own life, but those of her people.
It’s an impossible mission.
Too bad she doesn’t play the odds.

I don't know about anyone else but my first thought was 'hang on...I thought Darling was Gay?!' I got very confused...then a bit miffed because I assumed the book wasn't going to be any good if Darling spontaneously changed sexuality. Boy was I ever wrong. I bow down to the mastery of tortured heroes that Sherrilyn Kenyon has! I kiss her feet and grossly apologise for ever doubting her. This book is pure genius!!!
I'd actually read it before but wanted to take it on the train with me however, the sheer size of the paperback makes it physically impossible to read unless you have something to lean on...so I bought a second copy for my kindle and took that instead :) hence why it is in this week's StS. Go read it people...now!

That's all for this week folks, I'll be seeing you very soon!!

Stacking the Shelves {2}

Hello!! Welcome to my second instalment of the meme Stacking the Shelves hosted by Tynga's Reviews. Sorry it's a bit late this week!! I've enjoyed receiving a few books this week, as well as bargain hunting around Liverpool's book shops, so let me break it down for you :)

Books I've Received For Review

Cast in Peril by Michelle Sagara West (Chronicles of Elantra #8) - Copy provided by Harlequin via NetGalley.

USUALLY DISASTER DIDN'T STRIKE QUITE SO CLOSE TO HOME...
It has been a busy few weeks for Private Kaylin Neva. In between angling for a promotion, sharing her room with the last living female Dragon and dealing with more refugees than anyone knew what to do with, the unusual egg she'd been given was ready to hatch. Actually, that turned out to be lucky, because it absorbed the energy from the bomb that went off in her quarters....
So now might be the perfect time to leave Elantra and journey to the West March with the Barrani. If not for the disappearances of citizens in the fief of Tiamaris-disappearances traced to the very Barrani Kaylin will be traveling with...

What can I say, I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into this, and since it won't be released until September 25th, look out for my review mid way through September ;)

Mark of the Witch by Maggie Shayne (The Portal #1) - Copy provided by Harlequin via NetGalley

From New York Times bestselling author Maggie Shayne comes the first novel in her thrilling new trilogy, THE PORTAL!
She was born to save what he is sworn to destroy...
A lapsed Wiccan, Indira Simon doesn't believe in magic anymore. But when strange dreams of being sacrificed to an ancient Babylonian god have her waking up with real rope burns on her wrists, she's forced to acknowledge that she may have been too hasty in her rejection of the unknown. Then she meets mysterious and handsome Father Tomas. Emerging from the secrecy of an obscure Gnostic sect, he arrives with stories of a demon, a trio of warrior witches-and Indira's sacred calling. Yet there's something even Tomas doesn't know, an inescapable truth that will force him to choose between saving the life of the woman he's come to love-and saving the world.

Mmmm, looking forward to this as well. It sounds like something I'll enjoy :) Another September 25th release so again I'll probably review it sometime in early/mid September.

The Lost Prince by Julie Kagawa (The Iron Fey: Call of the Forgotten #1) - Copy provided by Harlequin via NetGalley :)

Don’t look at Them. Never let Them know you can see Them.
That is Ethan Chase’s unbreakable rule. Until the fey he avoids at all costs—including his reputation—begin to disappear, and Ethan is attacked. Now he must change the rules to protect his family. To save a girl he never thought he’s dare to fall for.
Ethan thought he had protected himself from his older sister’s world—the land of Faery. His previous time in the Iron Realm left him with nothing but fear and disgust for the world Meghan Chase has made her home, a land of myths and talking cats, of magic and seductive enemies. But when destiny comes for Ethan, there is no escape from a danger long, long forgotten.
My name is Ethan Chase. And I may not live to see my eighteenth birthday.

Excuse me while I faint...I freaked out when I got the notification that I could actually have a copy of this delicious work of art. I want to dive right in...but not allowed yet :( Anyway, Look for my review coming sort of the beginning of October as it's not released until 30th October!

Books I've Bought

Archangel's Consort by Nalini Singh (Guild Hunter #3)

Nalini Singh steps back into the shadows of her heartbreakingly original world where angels rule, vampires serve, and the innocent can pay the greatest price of all…
Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil…
A vampire has attacked a girls’ school—the assault one of sheer, vicious madness—and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders.
The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear.
An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed…

MY COLLECTION IS COMPLETE!! Finally I have all of the released Guild Hunter Novels...and as soon as Archangel's Storm is released, I'll be having that as well. I just love Elena and Raphael, I've read it before but it's still nice to have my own copy :)

Switched by Amanda Hocking (Trylle Trilogy #1)

What if your entire world was built on a lie?
Wendy Everly knew she was different the day her mother tried to kill her and accused her of having been switched at birth. Although certain she’s not the monster her mother claims she is – she does feel that she doesn't quite fit in...
She’s bored and frustrated by her small town life – and then there’s the secret that she can’t tell anyone. Her mysterious ability – she can influence people’s decisions, without knowing how, or why...
When the intense and darkly handsome newcomer Finn suddenly turns up at her bedroom window one night – her world is turned upside down. He holds the key to her past, the answers to her strange powers and is the doorway to a place she never imagined could exist. Förening, the home of the Trylle.
Finally everything makes sense. Among the Trylle, Wendy is not just different, but special. But what marks her out as chosen for greatness in this world also places her in grave danger. With everything around her changing, Finn is the only person she can trust. But dark forces are conspiring – not only to separate them, but to see the downfall everything that Wendy cares about.
The fate of Förening rests in Wendy’s hands, and the decisions she and Finn make could change all their lives forever...

I've been looking for a copy of this for a while now, so when I saw a pristine version in a charity shop for £2.50 I just had to have it. And that picture does not do justice to how beautiful this cover actually is!!

Well, that's all for this week, sorry again for posting late. Let me know what delights your shelves hold this week :)
See you later!!

Stacking the Shelves {1}

Hello everyone, well I've finally decided to join the meme Stacking the Shelves by Tynga's Reviews. I've been meaning to do it for a while now but just not go around to it! I will now do my best to keep you lovely people up to date with the books I receive/buy/borrow. So let's get on with this weeks haul :)

Books Received for Review

Ironskin by Tina Connolly (Ironskin, book1) - recieved from Tor via NetGalley

Jane Eliot wears an iron mask.
It’s the only way to contain the fey curse that scars her cheek. The Great War is five years gone, but its scattered victims remain—the ironskin.
When a carefully worded listing appears for a governess to assist with a "delicate situation"—a child born during the Great War—Jane is certain the child is fey-cursed, and that she can help.
Teaching the unruly Dorie to suppress her curse is hard enough; she certainly didn’t expect to fall for the girl’s father, the enigmatic artist Edward Rochart. But her blossoming crush is stifled by her own scars, and by his parade of women. Ugly women, who enter his closed studio...and come out as beautiful as the fey.
Jane knows Rochart cannot love her, just as she knows that she must wear iron for the rest of her life. But what if neither of these things is true? Step by step Jane unlocks the secrets of her new life—and discovers just how far she will go to become whole again.

I think this book sounds very interesting, almost Phantom of the Opera ish with the lead character wearing a mask that hides their true self from the one they love. I can't wait to see what happens :)

Forbidden by Jacquelyn Frank (The World of Nightwalkers, book 1) - Received from Ballantine Books via NetGalley

The unexpected happens in an instant. On her way to work, secretary Docia Waverley hurtles into a crashing crossroads, and she quickly begins to suspect that things will never be the same. Then, when a tall, blond, muscular stranger intervenes on her behalf, telling her it is his duty to protect her at all cost, what is just a feeling turns to proof positive. That is, as long as Docia’s savior doesn’t turn out to be a crazed kidnapper.
When Ram finds Docia, he has no doubt that she is his queen. But as this golden warrior sweeps in to protect her, he feels something more than body heat every time they touch. He is overwhelmed by a searing connection that goes deep into the twin souls inside him. A desire rises in him that is forbidden—this woman is his queen, the mate of his king, his leader, his best friend. And yet Docia is so vulnerable and attractive that she awakens a hunger in Ram that is undeniable, a carnal craving he cannot yield to . . . not without risking the very survival of the Bodywalkers.

Need I explain? It just sounds soooo good :) Can't wait to get started!

Books I've Bought

Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer
What happens when happily ever after... isn’t?
Delilah is a bit of a loner who prefers spending her time in the school library with her head in a book—one book in particular. Between the Lines may be a fairy tale, but it feels real. Prince Oliver is brave, adventurous, and loving. He really speaks to Delilah.
And then one day Oliver actually speaks to her. Turns out, Oliver is more than a one-dimensional storybook prince. He’s a restless teen who feels trapped by his literary existence and hates that his entire life is predetermined. He’s sure there’s more for him out there in the real world, and Delilah might just be his key to freedom.
Delilah and Oliver work together to attempt to get Oliver out of his book, a challenging task that forces them to examine their perceptions of fate, the world, and their places in it. And as their attraction to each other grows along the way, a romance blossoms that is anything but a fairy tale.

Well, what can I say...it's a beautiful book. I haven't read it yet but this hardback version is just gorgeous (hence why I bought it). It's got beautiful illustrations on the pages in black and white, and then occasionally there is a full page colour illustration that is amazing. Thank you so much to Dani at Pen to Paper for featuring this in her post a couple of weeks ago, it's the reason I looked it up :)

Well that's all for this week, I think I managed to be quite restrained on the buying front ;)
See you next week for another Stacking the Shelves!
